5 Easy and Nutritious After-School Snacks

Many busy parents find that jobs and daily responsibilities can get in the way of encouraging their children to eat right. The good news, however, is that there are tons of easy, nutritious, and delicious snacks that you can give your kids after day care or school.

  1. Carrots and Hummus
    This delicious, healthful snack is rich in vitamins and protein. The olive oil in the hummus is also beneficial—as a good fat, it can help lower cholesterol and protect against heart disease.
  2. Popcorn with Nutritional Yeast
    For one serving, combine two cups of fresh popcorn with one tablespoon of nutritional yeast. It tastes like cheesy popcorn, but it is lower in cholesterol and calories! Kids will love the crunchy texture and cheesy taste.
  3. Chocolate Trail Mix
    This is a simple snack, but be careful with portions, as this snack can be salty and high in calories. Give your child a handful for a sweet treat he or she is sure to love along with some celery sticks for a delicious crunch.
  4. Tropical Cottage Cheese
    Chop up ½ cup of fresh mango and pineapple, and toss it with ½ cup nonfat cottage cheese. It’s scrumptious and filling, and kids will love the sweet taste!
  5. Crunchy Curried Tuna Salad
    Mix ½ cup of canned tuna with one teaspoon of curry powder, one tablespoon of red onion, and two chopped ribs of celery. This tuna dish is a heart-healthy food that’s also delicious.
