Back-to-school time is hectic for parents, but it can be especially overwhelming for children. Between preparing for their classes and figuring out who they’re going to be sitting with at lunch, kids need a lot of support from their parents to start the year out right, no matter whether they’re starting kindergarten or high school. Here’s what you can do to help your little one get ready for the big day:
Decide on a Routine
Mornings can be crazy during the school year, and afternoons can bring the unique challenge of homework. Avoid the rushing and the panic by establishing a routine and sticking to it. Before the first day of school, talk to your child about when he is going to get up in the morning, when he is going to do homework after school, what your plans are for after-school daycare, where extra-curricular activities will fit into the picture, and anything else you’ll both need to accomplish every day. Involve your kids in planning the routine. Knowing what to expect will help soothe any anxieties children have about their new schedule.
Tour the School
If your child is new to the school, help build their confidence by giving her a tour of the building. This idea is especially important if you’ve got a little one going to preschool or kindergarten for the first time. Let your child see the classrooms, and make sure she knows where important things like the restroom and lunchroom are. If possible, drop by and meet the teacher with your child, so the teacher is already a familiar face on the first day of school.
Make Supply Shopping Fun
When it’s time to buy supplies, bring your child and let him get involved in picking out his new pencils, notebooks, backpack, and lunch bag. Choosing the gear for school will help your little one get excited about getting into the classroom.
